What is your approach to pet training?
My approach to training is holistic. I consider all aspects of your pet’s wellbeing, including health, diet, situation and background. As an Elite Fear Free Certified Professional, my approach completely excludes any aversive or dominance-based techniques, and I aim to build your dog’s confidence and self-esteem.
Which of your services is right for me?
If you are unsure whether your dog is best suited to a class or a 1-2-1 setting, just get in touch. I don’t bite (promise) and I’m happy to talk through your dog’s individual needs.
Is my pet too old to be trained?
No pet is ever too old to learn something new, though it depends on the outcome you want. Teaching your 13-year-old dog to be an agility champion is probably off the cards. Making your older dog as comfortable and stress-free as possible to improve their later years is absolutely achievable.
How much does a dog behaviourist cost on the Isle of Man?
A private behavioural assessment at Ruff Mutts is £100, with follow-up visits at £75. That includes a bespoke treatment plan, referrals where needed and unlimited email support between sessions. Every price is listed on the Services & Fees page.
Do I need a dog trainer or a dog behaviourist?
If your dog struggles with simple instructions like sit, stay or coming back, a trainer is usually the right fit. If the problem is reactivity, fear, anxiety, high instinct drives, or separation and destructive behaviour, a behaviourist looks at why the behaviour happens. Ruff Mutts offers both.
Do you use e-collars, slip leads or other aversive equipment?
No. Ruff Mutts uses rewards-based methods only and does not use or promote fear-inducing equipment, including slip leads, tightening leads or harnesses, and e-collars.
Where on the Isle of Man do you work?
Ruff Mutts is based in Onchan and works with dogs and owners across the Isle of Man. Behaviour assessments take place in your home, and group classes run at outdoor venues on the island.
How long does assistance dog training take?
On average 18 to 24 months. It starts with a £200 suitability assessment and task planning, with £100 follow-ups built around your specific needs.
What is your cancellation policy?
Payment remains due for non-attendance or cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice. Please phone 07624 471159 or email kate@ruffmutts.net with as much notice as you can.
