As with any sort of canine professional, not all groomers are created equal. There are some important things to consider when looking for the perfect doggy beautician for your beloved pooch.
A set appointment or a drop-off time?
A specific appointment means your dog has their own allocated time, so they are not rushed, no other dogs are present and the groomer gives your dog their undivided attention. Some groomers have multiple dogs in at once, which is a much more stressful environment.
How will your dog be kept?
Ask how your dog will be kept before and after their groom. If there are multiple dogs in an appointment slot, your dog may be crated near other dogs, which can be very stressful if that isn’t normal for them. In a 1-2-1 appointment your dog is far more likely to be allowed freedom of movement within the premises.
What happens if your dog gets stressed?
Will the groomer prioritise your dog’s welfare and stop or change their approach? Or will they carry on regardless to get it done?
What restraint is used?
Is it something your dog will be happy with, or more than your dog (or you) are comfortable with? Don’t be afraid to ask where and how your dog will be groomed.
Rewards
Your groomer should be happy to give your dog rewards for cooperation, to help them relax and engage. If your dog has a favourite treat, leave some with your groomer for the session.
Ultimately, don’t be afraid to ask! If your gut tells you something isn’t quite right, or you are uncomfortable leaving your dog, find somewhere else.
